9/10

There are so many good games to play on the Gear VR that I don’t feel comfortable labeling one of them as the best. But if I were to make an equally weighted list of the five best games that I have played so far on this platform, Anshar Wars 2 would be on that list. It looks and plays great with engaging action and plenty of variety in level design. In spite of some low res textures and the occasional choppy animation, AW2 looks fantastic. This is the sort of game that we want more of on the Gear VR. With 13 levels that you will want to play more than once, you will absolutely get your money’s worth.

Smash Hit

9/10

I really enjoy my time playing Smash Hit for the Gear VR, and it’s definitely a game that I find myself playing over and over, despite having completed all of the levels numerous times. It offers an intense experience of nonstop destruction, yet manages to still be relaxing due to the nearly hypnotic music and the ability to sit on your comfy couch while playing. Not only does Smash Hit appeal to a wide range of players, its replayability and free price tag make this game a “must have” title for any Gear VR owner.

9/10

Anyone claiming that the Gear VR doesn’t have “real” games should at least consider Herobound Spirit Champion. It’s a fantastic hack ‘n’ slash dungeon crawler that will keep you entertained and challenged. Storyline? Check. Long gameplay duration? This may not be an epic 30 hour journey, but you can expect roughly four or five hours of gameplay. Multiple environments and quality graphics? The four unique realms keep your surroundings looking fresh and inviting. A variety of puzzles? Definitely. Overall, if you’re interested in action, adventure, or RPG games, you need to try Herobound Spirit Champion.

Esper 2

8.5/10

Esper 2 takes what was great about Esper 1 and blows it out of the water, while at the same time solving a lot of the problems that were present in the first game. The puzzles are truly challenging and rewarding, even if there are rare occasions where they are frustrating. Esper 2 looks fantastic and has moved beyond the four walls of Geoffrey’s old office out into the wide world. If that’s not enough, they didn’t skimp on the voice work either, bringing in talented actors to bring the characters to life. Esper 2 is, no surprise, a must play game on the Gear VR.

Neverout

8.5/10

Neverout succeeds in every area. In VR, it is one of the most immersive games I’ve played, taking place entirely within small rooms that keep everything close so you don’t lose the 3D effect. As a puzzler, it is smart, such that even when you complete one of the easier puzzles you will smile at the cleverness of the developers. And you will be driven to find the solution to the hard ones, even when it seems like you’ve tried everything. The sound is perfectly basic. No music, just mood. It does it’s part to add to the feeling of isolation. The graphics are top notch as well. There were many times I stopped and took some time to admire just how real everything looks.
